“I am planning on having an epidural. Why should I attend a childbirth class?”
Childbirth education involves much more than just learning breathing techniques or relaxation skills for labor. These classes are useful for every couple expecting a child. Here are some of the things you will learn in the typical childbirth class:
- Information about the normal birth process, including the physical changes that will occur to your body, as well as what to expect during labor and in the postpartum (recovery) period, including coping mechanisms for discomfort, pain, etc. These might include breathing techniques, relaxation techniques, distraction techniques, and more.
- Discussion of epidurals, analgesics and other medical interventions during labor that will allow the couple to make informed decisions about any such procedures that may arise during their birth experience. Discussion about unexpected outcomes such as Cesarean deliveries or potential complications will also be covered.
- You’ll get answers to a lot of questions that you might never have even thought to ask!
- The process of childbirth education can help partners get more involved in the process of pregnancy, give you a chance to meet other couples who are expecting, and allow you a comfortable setting in which to ask questions that you might be to reluctant to ask your doctor.
