Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Level IIIB Neonatal Care for Preemies and Seriously Ill Babies

Some of our smallest patients will require extra attention. Newborns who are born prematurely or with serious illness may be admitted to our Level IIIB Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for more intensive medical attention. We care for babies born at or after 24 weeks gestation.

Having a baby in the NICU can be unexpected and frightening. At Rose Medical Center in Denver, we understand this, so we not only provide state-of-the-art, lifesaving care for your child, but we also treat you and your family with compassion and empathy. We believe in using the healing power of love and touch to give our youngest patients the best care possible. Our mission statement is to provide the highest quality of healthcare in collaboration with the family while supporting the optimal development of the infant.

The NICU at Rose Medical Center Includes:

  • Level IIIB rating
  • 24 beds located in 19 private rooms with isolation capabilities
  • Infant rooms that accommodate the family to stay at the bedside as much as you desire
  • In-house coverage by board-certified neonatologists (doctors specializing in the care of premature and seriously ill newborns) and neonatal nurse practitioners
  • Liberal 24 hour per day visitation
  • Waiting area for visitors
  • A Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP)-trained developmental specialist
  • Three certified lactation consultants who are also NICU nurses
  • Frozen donor breast milk
  • Kangaroo Care (skin-to-skin holding) encouraged
  • Secure unit to ensure safety

All private rooms with accommodation for twins and triplet deliveries are equipped with a giraffe bed which transitions from the needs of the extremely premature to the needs of the “grower feeder” who is transitioning to home.

Each private room is equipped with everything needed to assist with breast milk production and feeding of your infant.  Individual room refrigerators keeps the milk at your infant’s bedside.  We offer specialized breast pumps designed to increase milk production for the premature infant and  infant milk warmers which provide a consistent feeding temperature of the milk for optimal utilization of the nutrients.

We are blessed to have partnered with Hope through Music and have a harpist who performs weekly in our common area.  It is a very peaceful and soothing experience for the infants and their families.

We recognize that private rooms are the best environment for the ill or premature infant but seek to offer socialization to the families, recognizing that you are not alone in your NICU journey.  We offer daily tea time from 2-4 pm in the family lounge and bi-monthly parent support group activities.
