Surgical Procedures for GERD/Heartburn
The surgeons at Rose Medical Center offer several options for patients suffering from GERD/Heartburn, including:
- Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication
- Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication with EsophX
GERD and heartburn typically occur when the valve between the esophagus and the stomach, which opens to allow food to pass through, doesn't close as it should and allows acid to move back up into the esophagus. These procedures are recommended for patients with moderately severe to severe GERD because they provide a long-term solution.
Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication
This is a minimally invasive, laparoscopic procedure for GERD and heartburn. The surgery is done on the stomach and esophagus, and can also fix a hiatal hernia (when the stomach starts to move into the chest cavity). Follow-up studies have shown that patients have very little recurrent heartburn and more than 90% are very satisfied with the surgery.
Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication with EsophX
The Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF) with EsophX is an endoscopic procedure, which means it is done through the mouth. With this technique, there are no incisions or scars, and the surgeon can reconstruct the antireflux barrier between the esophagus and stomach. 93% of patients report being free of heartburn two years after the procedure.
