Genetic Counseling
As part of Rose's comprehensive cancer program, we offer genetic counseling services through a partnership with Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers at Rose. Through genetic counseling, patients can learn more about the possible presence of a genetic condition in their family, such as inherited forms of cancer. In addition to helping determine your risk for certain types of cancer, genetic counselors will educate you about available genetic testing and help you through the testing process, if appropriate.
You may benefit from genetic counseling if you:
- Have cancer
- Have a family history of cancer
- Are concerned about your cancer risk
During a consultation, the genetic counselor will review your medical history and family history in order to identify your individual risk for cancer, and talk to you about hereditary cancer syndromes, prevention recommendations, and screening options. Also, you will discuss the availability, risk and benefits of genetic testing. It is helpful if you can bring with you a health history of your family members to your genetic consultation; for each family member, please note the type of cancer they developed and at what age they were diagnosed.
Undergoing a genetic assessment and/or genetic testing may be challenging. To help, our specially trained genetic counselors provide support throughout the entire process. They will provide you with the knowledge you and your family need to completely understand your cancer risk and available medical options.
If you think you and/or your family member may benefit from a cancer risk assessment with a genetic counselor at Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers at Rose, please call 303-321-0302 to schedule a consultation.
