Chiropractic care is a nonsurgical, drug-free approach that aims to treat the whole person. A chiropractor diagnoses and treats patients whose health problems are associated with the body's muscular, nervous and skeletal systems, especially the spine.
Chiropractic treatment includes:
- Non-manipulative techniques: electrical stimulation, massage or ultrasound
- Manipulative techniques: adjusting or manipulating the spinal column when the source of pain involved musculoskeletal structures. By applying controlled and specific pressure directly to a joint or muscle, successful manipulation may release a joint into the correct position and/or alleviate muscle spasms.
Chiropractic care may be a treatment option when the patient's spine is stable and without nerve root impingement. Chiropractic care is not recommended to treat spondylolisthesis, abnormal spinal curvature or disc herniation.
